According to a release made available to reporters in Enugu by Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, HA Gambo, the discovery followed the reinvigorated Directives of the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Brigadier
General Ibrahim Attahiru to troops on assumption of Office that they should embrace and apply faithful compliance of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Vision for the Nigerian Army.
Gambo averred that the vision entails carrying out their constitutional duties professionally and responsively to stamp out kidnapping, militancy, illegal oil bunkering, sophisticated armed robbery, crimes and its related offences within 82 Division Area of Operational Responsibility.
The factory, he continued, was allegedly being owned and operated by one Mrs Chinyere Nomeh who claims to be a nurse at Adonia Medical Centre located at No 115 Agbani Road in Enugu.
He stated that the operatives arrested 13 suspects, adding that the suspects have been handed over to the National Agency for prohibition of Traffic in persons (NAPTIP) in their office in Enugu for investigation and further action.
“Consequently, troops of 103 Battalion Quick Response Group went into action and crackdown a baby harvesting factory located within Akwuke Road, Garki Awkunawnaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State. Arrest was made and preliminary investigation into the case revealed that the factory is allegedly being owned and operated by one Mrs Chinyere Nomeh who bears an identity card of Adonia Medical Centre located at No 115 Agbani Road in Enugu as a Nurse.
“She claimed that she uses the house to admit and shelter pregnant women rejected by their parents as well as children driven away from their homes by their family members. She further revealed that she takes delivery of the babies and sell them for different sums of money depending on the interest of the buyer.
“Investigation revealed that four of the above mentioned culprits are pregnant; two gave birth three days before their arrest on Saturday 22nd August, 2015 while others are Mrs Chinyere Nomeh’s children and associates. One of the pregnant culprits claimed that she was raped by unknown persons and that she found succour in the home” he stated.
Responding, the Acting Zonal Commander of NAPTIP Enugu Zonal Office Mrs Nkiruka Michael while assuring the leader of the Team of Military Personnel from Headquarters, 82 Division led by Major KC Zeigbo who supervised the handing over said that in-depth investigation into the case will commence immediately to fish out more culprits and punish them according to the laws of the land as enshrined in the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as Amended.
She particularly commended responsiveness and the professionalism of the Army Stressing that it will improve Inter-agency cooperation and partnership.
