Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, on Wednesday declared that coaching
the country will be a difficult task, even as he confirmed that team
captain, Vincent Enyeama will not be part of the team’s AFCON 2017
qualifier against Taifa Stars of Tanzania on Saturday.
Addressing sports journalists at the Eagles’ Bolton White Hotel camp in Abuja, the former Eagles’ skipper stated that coaching Nigeria was made difficult by the people, who he said knew not only how to watch matches but also analyse same.
This notwithstanding, Oliseh said Nigerians now realised that he and his team crew were working hard to build a team everybody would be proud of, saying that
he had not seen anyone saying they were not doing anything.
“Coaching Nigeria is going to be difficult. To work in Nigeria is made difficult because of the people of my country; they can analyse matches,” the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics gold medallist said.
He added that because of this, we was expecting criticism from every corner, saying that, “I am expecting criticism. I am seeing it everywhere. Every Nigerian, even the ones that criticise me, is seeing that we are working. I have not seen anyone saying we are not doing anything.”
While confirming that Enyeama would not feature in Saturday’s match, Oliseh stated that he was not under any pressure in his official match as the Eagles’ gaffer, stating that he was not afraid of leading the team to Tanzania.
“The only time in my life when I was under pressure was 20 minutes before getting onto the pitch versus Bulgaria (at USA ‘94). Ever since then, I have not been afraid,” he said.
Oliseh further stated that, “three things can happen (in Tanzania): we can win, draw or lose. We are building; it is real building now. The players are getting together now. I am not looking at whether we win or not but I am looking at my team playing together to serve Nigeria. What the result is, we will take it like that.”
He lamented that Enyeama’s last minute withdrawal from the away game had put the team in a complicated situation, saying, however, that the team would not crumble as a result of the Eagles’ skipper’s withdrawal from the match.
“Enyeama will not be around. I am confirming it, he will not be part of the team. With all due respect, Vincent Enyeama is a very classic goalkeeper. His late withdrawal has put us in a complicated situation.
“The question, however, is what happens if our best player falls sick a night before the match? Should Nigeria withdraw from the match? It does not sound any respect to my other players to say that because someone is not there, they will crumble. We have to move on. We have to respect the choice of players whether they want to come or not.
